Women’s Hockey Defeated By Northeastern, 2-1

BOSTON, Mass. - The Providence College women’s hockey team was defeated by the Northeastern Huskies, 2-1, on Nov. 6. All three goals in the game came from shorthanded tallies. The Friars move to 5-7-0, 2-3-0 HE and Northeastern improves to 8-3-1, 4-1-0 HE.

In the first period, Northeastern took a 2-0 lead after scoring two shorthanded goals in under one minute. McKenna Brand scored 3:12 minutes into the opening period and Denisa Krizova scored at 4:04.

Providence followed with a shorthanded goal of its own 10:05 minutes into the period. Christina Putigna (Grimsby, Ontario) scored her first shorthanded goal of the season. Whitney Dove (Port Moody, British Columbia) chipped the puck up the boards in the Friars’ defensive zone, where Putigna passed to herself off the wall and skated into a breakaway. The sophomore forward shot the puck top shelf to cut the Huskies’ lead to 2-1.

Alanna Serviss (Chicago, Ill.) made six saves and the Friars recorded five shots on net in the opening period.

The Huskies and Friars skated through the second period scoreless and Providence outshot Northeastern, 13-6 for a two period total, 18-14.

The Friars outshot the Huskies in the third period 15-12 but were unable to collect the equalizer. Providence finished the game with 33 shots and the 2-1 loss marks the first time the Friars were held to less than two goals in the 2016-17 season.

Serviss finished the game with 24 saves.

Providence is back in action on Nov. 12 at Schneider Arena to host the University of Vermont Catamounts at 2:00 p.m.
