Women’s Hockey Falls To Vermont, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women’s ice hockey team was defeated by Vermont, 3-1, on Oct. 24 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. It marked the 2015-16 Hockey East opener for both programs. The Friars fall to 0-4-0 (0-1-0 Hockey East), while Vermont improves to 1-6-0 (1-0-0 Hockey East).

The two teams played to a scoreless draw in the opening period. Freshman goaltender Madison Myers (Colchester, Vt.) collected 10 of her 22 saves on the day in the opening period.

The Catamounts got on the board for a 1-0 lead just under one minute into second period. Dayna Colang tipped a Taylor Willard shot from the point.

Vermont added its second tally of the game with a power play goal from Bridget Baker (7:36) in the third period. Saana Valkama and Daria O’Neill were credited with assists as the Catamounts took a 2-0 lead.

The Friars responded with an unassisted goal from Kate Friesen (Altona, Manitoba) in the third period, cutting Vermont’s lead to 2-1.

Vermont clinched the victory after an empty-net goal from Victoria Andreakos with just 43 seconds left in the game. Andreakos goal was unassisted. The Catamounts held a slight advantage in shots in the game (25-24). Vermont also finished the day 1-4 on the power play, while the Friars were 0-4.

The Friars continue Hockey East play on Oct. 25 at 2:00 p.m. at Northeastern University.
