PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Ninth-ranked Mercyhurst converted three power play goals and defeated the Providence College women's ice hockey team, 5-0, Saturday at Schneider Arena.
The Friars were outshot by the Lakers, 49-23, and yielded a hat trick to Laker senior Bailey Bram.
The Lakers held a 1-0 edge after the first period, courtesy a Christie Cicero, unassisted score at the 4:04 mark. The sophomore forward converted after wrestling away possession behind the net.
Mercyhurst extended the lead by taking advantage of successive, Friar penalties midway through the middle period. At the 9:23 mark, Bram converted from the doorstep while enjoying a 5-on-3 advantage. Forty-nine seconds later, Bram scored with a slapshot with a 5-on-4 edge.
The Lakers added two insurance strikes in the third. Five minutes in, Bram converted on another power play advantage for her third of the game. Teammate Kelley Steadman rounded out the scoring with an even-strength score at the 14:40.
Friar goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) stopped a season-best 44 shots. Mercyhurst netminder Hillary Pattenden saved 23.
The game marked the Friars' annual effort to stop domestic violence. Proceeds from the game will be presented to two area organizations that support the victims of domestic violence and work for its prevention, Sojourner House and SOAR.
The two teams meet again tomorrow, October 16, at Schneider Arena. Face-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. and tickets are available by calling (401) 865 GOPC or by visiting Friars.com.
