Rickard’s Overtime Goal Lifts Women’s Hockey Over Syracuse

The Providence College women’s ice hockey team, led by sophomore Meaghan Rickard (Coventry, R.I.), completed an impressive comeback to defeat Syracuse University, 3-2, in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Tennity Ice Pavilion.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
- The Orange outshot the Friars 7-5 in the first period. Madison Myers (Colchester, Vt.) made seven saves in the opening frame.
- A Syracuse penalty with five seconds remaining and then a Christina Putigna (Grimsby, Ontario) slashing penalty at the buzzer led to 4-on-4 action to open the second period.
- Just 17 seconds into the second frame, Alysha Burriss scored on a breakaway to give the Orange a 1-0 lead.
- The Orange capitalized again less than a minute later to increase the lead to 2-0. Victoria Kilmek scored from in front on the 4-on-3 opportunity. Her goal, assisted by Lindsay Eastwood, was the first of her collegiate career.
- Maureen Murphy (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored for the Friars just 37 seconds into the third period. She corralled Neve Van Pelt’s (Mitchell, Ontario) cross-ice pass and sent it into the back of the net.
- Meaghan Rickard tied the game at the 7:24 mark of the third period. She skated through traffic and scored to make it 2-2. Putigna was credited with the assist, her team-leading seventh of the season.
- Rickard played the hero in overtime, netting the game-winner on a breakaway. It is the second time in her career that she has notched a multi-goal game.
- The game was the Friars’ first overtime contest so far this season. The last time Providence won in overtime was on Feb. 12, 2017 at Merrimack.
