Women's Hockey Rallies To Tie No. 5 St. Lawrence, 3-3, In Overtime

CANTON, N.Y. - - The Providence College women's hockey team skated to a 3-3 overtime tie at No. 5 St. Lawrence on Saturday, October 10 at Appleton Arena in Canton, N.Y. Sophomore Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.) scored with 1:30 left in the third period, while senior Arianna Rigano (Malden, Mass.) scored twice to lead the Friars.

St. Lawrence (0-1-1) took a 1-0 first period on a goal by Jamie Goldsmith at the 11:03 mark. Providence (2-1-1) tied the game at 1-1 when Rigano scored the first of her two goals with just five seconds left in the second period.

The third period was a back-and-forth battle. St. Lawrence's Vanessa Emond scored a short-handed goal at the 4:49 to give her team a 2-1 lead. Just 45 seconds later, Rigano struck again to even the score at 2-2. It marked Rigano's third goal of the season. However, Goldsmith also scored her second goal of the afternoon as the Saints again took a one-goal lead (3-2) with 3:22 remaining. The Friars responded with 1:30 left as Cottrell scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season to tie the game, 3-3, and force overtime.

The Saints finished with a 35-22 shot advantage. PC sophomore Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) made 32 saves, while St. Lawrence's Brittony Chartier finished with 19 stops.

Providence is back in action on Friday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m. with a home game against Colgate at Schneider Arena.
