Final Stats

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Providence College women’s hockey team defeated RIT, 3-0, on Oct. 8 to finish the weekend sweep in Rochester. Rachel Rockwell earned three points on two assists and one goal. All three Friar goals came on the power play. Providence improves to 2-3-0 and RIT moves to 0-4-0.

The Friars and Tigers skated through a scoreless first period and RIT held the advantage in shots, 14-9. Madison Myers (Colchester, Vt.) turned aside all 14 shots she faced and helped the Friars successfully kill two penalties.

The Friars notched two power play goals in the second period. Blair Parent (Blain, Minn.) tallied her first goal of the season at the 14:21 mark. Rachel Rockwell (Broadview Heights, Ohio) moved the puck to Kate Friesen (Altona, Manitoba), who took a shot from the point that Parent finished on for a 1-0 Friar lead.

With 48 seconds remaining in the second period, Rockwell tallied her first collegiate goal - also on the power play. Friesen took a hard shot that missed the net and wrapped around the boards to Neve Van Pelt (Mitchell, Ontario). Van Pelt fed Rockwell who skated into the slot and ripped a shot that hit the post and then over the goal line.

Myers turned aside eight more shots in the second period to keep the Tigers from getting on the board.

At 10:19 in the third period Christina Putigna (Grimsby, Ontario) went top-shelf for her first goal of the season. Rockwell and Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) assisted on the goal. Carels assist marks her eight point on the 2016 season and a five game point streak.

Myers finished the game with 33 saves and helped the Friars kill off 10 penalties, including a 6-on-3 in the last minutes of the game.

The Friars are back in action on Oct. 18 at 7:00 p.m. against Union College at Schneider Arena.
