BEMIDJI, MINN. - Goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) made 31 saves and freshman Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal, but the ninth-ranked Providence College women's ice hockey team fell to host Bemidji State, 3-1, on Saturday.
BSU carried momentum to open the game, outshooting the Friars, 17-4, in the opening period. At the 8:01 mark, Beaver defenseman Kimberly Lieder scored from the right point on a slapshot through traffic. Just under five minutes later, at 12:49 of the first, Lacasse stopped Mackenzie Thurston on a breakaway. A scramble ensued until BSU freshman Rachel Kelly deposited home the loose puck for a 2-0, Beavers' lead heading into the first intermission.
Bemidji State extended the cushion to 3-0 midway through the second period, when senior Montana Vichorek stepped out of the penalty box in time to intercept an outlet pass and drive the puck home from the blue line.
The Friars got on the board at the 11:57 mark of the middle period. Freshman Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.) intercepted a pass behind the BSU net, wheeled in front and scored, top shelf, for PC's first strike of the young season.
