BEMIDJI, MINN. - The ninth-ranked Providence College women's ice hockey team opened up the regular season Friday with a 0-0 tie at Bemidji State.

Providence goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) played the key role, stopping 39 shots on the night, including 15 in the first period. It was her 13th career shutout.

BSU netminder Zuzana Tomcikova halted 23.

After three scoreless periods and one five-minute overtime, the teams did take part in a shootout. Friar freshman Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.) scored the only shootout conversion, keeping the puck on her forehand to beat Tomcikova. The shootout victory does not figure in to the Friars' overall record.

Providence last played to a scoreless tie on January 10, 2003, when goaltender Jana Bugden stopped 26 saves for a 0-0 skate with Niagra.

It is only the second time since November of 2008 that the Friars have failed to score a goal. Providence was shut out at Vermont last January 30, 1-0.

This was the first ever meeting between the two programs. They will meet again tomorrow evening, October 1. Face-off is scheduled for 5:07 p.m. EST. and the game can be heard on Friars.com.

The Friars home-opener will be October 15 when Mercyhurst come to Schneider Arena for a 1 p.m. start. Tickets are available by calling (401) 865 GOPC.
