BOSTON, Mass. -

The Providence College women’s ice hockey team was defeated by No. 10 Boston University, 5-2, on Sept. 25 in the season opener for both teams. Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) scored both goals for the Friars. Providence moves to 0-1-0 (0-1-0 Hockey East) and Boston University improves to 1-0-0 (1-0-0 Hockey East).

The Terriers took a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals form Mary Parker (5:08) and Samantha Sutherland (14:54).

The Friars got on the board four minutes into the second period. Carels picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated into offensive territory and ripped a shot along the tops of the left circle, beating BU’s Victoria Hanson top right corner.

BU extended the lead to 3-1 just over five minutes into the third period. But the Friars responded less than thirty seconds later by way of Carels. After a scrum in the neutral zone Kate Friesen (Altona, Manitoba) collected the puck and sent Carels on her way down the left boards. Carels skated into the offensive zone with defensive pressure but took a quick shot to go in top shelf.

Providence continued offensive pressure, outshooting BU 17-11 in the third period but succumbed to penalties. BU scored a second power play goal with 1:30 remaining in regulation making it 4-2. The Friars pulled Madison Myers (Colchester, Vt.) for the extra man advantage but BU’s Sutherland scored an empty net goal with 47 seconds remaining in the game.

Providence outshot BU 36-33 and Myers made 28 saves. The Friars had 11 penalties and the Terriers took 10.

The Friars are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 2:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena for the home opener against Robert Morris University.
