Women's Hockey Defeats Maine 5-3 in ECAC Eastern League Quarterfinals

The Providence College women's hockey team defeated Maine, 5-3, on Saturday, March 9 in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Eastern League Tournament at PC's Schneider Arena. Providence (18-13-4) advances to the league semifinals, where it will meet Niagara on Friday, March 15 at the University of Connecticut.

Maine (16-15-4) took the early lead as sophomore Jamie Hill scored on the power play at the 4:35 mark of the first period. The Friars tied the game at 1-1 on the player advantage as junior Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass.) recorded her 13th goal of the season. PC took its first lead when freshman Danielle Bourgette (Anaheim, Calif.) tallied her first collegiate goal with 47 seconds remaining in the opening period.

After the Friars increased their lead to 3-1 on a goal by junior Melanie Ruzzi (Burnsville, Minn.), the Black Bears quickly tied the game at 3-3 on goals from freshman Cheryl White and junior Cindy Biron in the third period, with both goals coming 2:06 apart. However, PC freshman Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) scored the game winner at the 7:53 mark of the third period to lift PC into the semifinals. Ruzzi added an empty netter with 16 remaining to cap off the scoring.

PC outshot Maine, 34-15. Maine's sophomore goaltender Lara Smart made 29 saves in the loss, while Amy Quinlan (Baton Rouge, La.) stopped 12 shots.
