Box Score

The No. 8 Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Niagara University, 3-2, on Friday, February 28 at Dwyer Arena.

The Friars got on the board 2:43 into the first period when senior Melanie Ruzzi (Burnsville, Minn.) released a hard slap shot from the left point and scored as the puck deflected off a Niagara defender and past goaltender Jennifer Mascaro. Freshman goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) kept the Purple Eagles off the scoreboard with several acrobatic saves as the Friars' penalty killing unit was caught on the ice for an extended period of time. In a penalty filled second period both teams had chances but were unable to score. Providence's penalty killing unit was in top form as they killed off all of Niagara's chances including a five on three opportunity. The third period was a back and forth battle that saw junior Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) slam home a rebound with 9:09 remaining in the game to put the Friars up by two. Niagara scored two goals in under three minutes to tie the game. The Friars controlled overtime and won the game on a goal by sophomore Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I) at 4:39 with the assists going to Halcisak and sophomore Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.).

Providence outshot Niagara, 22-20. Bugden made 18 saves as the Friars moved to 22-6-6 overall on the year, while Niagara fell to 14-16-3 overall.

No. 8 Providence College returns to action on Saturday, March 15 when they travel to Northeastern to play in the HOCKEY EAST semifinals.
