No. 8 Women's Ice Hockey Upsets No. 5 New Hampshire, 7-4

The No. 8 Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated No. 5 New Hampshire, 7-4, on Saturday, February 22 at Schneider Arena.
Providence played a strong all-around game as they scored goals in four of the possible seven ways; even strength, powerplay, short-handed and empty net. The Friars got on the board early in the first period as freshman Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) fired the puck past the Wildcats' goaltender Jen Huggon after picking up a rebound off of a shot from junior Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.). The assist was Halcisak's 30th point of the season and the 100th of her career. The Friars special teams played a solid game as they went two for four on the powerplay and added a short-handed goal. Junior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) scored the short-handed goal, her third of the season, 6:50 into the third period to put Providence ahead for good. Sophomore Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) scored her tenth powerplay goal of the season tying her for second in the nation. Halcisak scored an empty net goal with 4:49 remaining in the game giving her one goal and four assists on the day for a game-high five points.
Providence was outshot by New Hampshire, 39-24, while freshman goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) made 35 saves on 39 shots. Bugden improved her record to 16-5-5 on the year and helped the Friars move to 20-6-6 overall and 12-1-1 in HOCKEY EAST as the Wildcats fell to 23-6-2 overall and 11-2-0 in HOCKEY EAST. With the victory Providence posts their 12th 20 win season and the fourth straight under Head Coach Bob Deraney.
No. 8 Providence College returns to action on Sunday, February 23 when they host the University of Maine at Schneider Arena at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2003 Schneider Arena, Providence, R.I.
