The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Boston College, 8-1, on Saturday, February 21 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. in the first game of a weekend home-and-home series.

The Eagles came out flying as they got on the board at 10:54 of the first period. Megan Scully tallied the goal with assists going to Alaina Clark and Heidi Seidwand. Junior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) answered for the Friars, on the power play, at the 16:23 mark as linemates freshman Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) and senior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) picked up the assists.

Providence gained the early advantage in the second period as junior Christina Redmond (Dorchester, Mass.) notched her second goal of the season, which proved to be the game winner, short-handed. Sophomore Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) scored her first of two goals on the day at the 9:10 mark, while Zimmerman scored her second goal of the day just over five minutes later to closeout the period.

The Friars stretched their lead to seven in the third and put the game out of reach. Senior Sarah Youlen (Potsdam, N.Y.), junior Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.), Laffin and junior Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) all lit the lamp for Providence in the final period.

Providence outshot Boston College, 50-9. Senior Amy Quinlan (Baton Rouge, La.) earned her third win of the season making eight saves, as the Friars improved to 14-11-2 overall and 9-3-1 in HOCKEY EAST, while Boston College falls to 5-16-3 overall and 0-12-1 in HOCKEY EAST.

Providence College returns to action on Sunday, February 22 when they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to complete their home-and-home series with the Eagles at Kelley Rink at 7:30 p.m.
