Women's Ice Hockey Defeats No. 10 Brown, 2-1 in Overtime
Feb. 18, 2004
The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated No. 10 Brown, 2-1 in overtime, on Wednesday, February 18 at Meehan Auditorium in Providence, Rhode Island.
The Friars completed the first season-sweep of the Bears since the 1991-92 season when freshman Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored just 33 seconds into overtime. Junior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) controlled a face-off in the Bears' defensive zone and gave it off to Watrous who flipped the puck towards Brown goaltender Katie Germain. Germain misjudged the attempt and had the puck sail over her glove, bounce off the right post, down to the goal line and over to give the Friars the win.
Providence gained the early advantage in the second period as junior Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) moved through the Brown defense and slid the puck past Germain. The goal was set up by a kick save off the right pad of Friar sophomore goaltender Janna Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) that caromed to junior Danielle Bourgette (Anaheim, Calif.) who set the puck ahead to Payton. Bugden was credited with an assist on the goal, her first career point. The Friars kept the lead until 11 minutes into the third when Ashlee Drover scored to tie the game and eventually force the extra period.
Providence outshot Brown, 29-25. Budgen earned the win making 24 saves, as the Friars improved to 13-11-2 on the season, while Brown falls to 12-8-2.
Providence College returns to action on Saturday, February 21 when they host the first game of its weekend series with the Boston College at Schneider Arena at 12:00 p.m.
