PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team skated to a draw, 0-0, against #7 Northeastern Friday at Schneider Arena.
With the point, the Friars have clinched at least fourth-place in the Hockey East standings and home ice advantage for the quarterfinal round. That game will be next Saturday, February 25 at Schneider.
The story Friday night was the two goaltenders, as Friar Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) and NU's Florence Schelling were spectacular through three periods and overtime. The open, high energy contest produced 80 shots combined. Lacasse stopped all 42 that she saw. Schelling stopped all 38 aimed at her cage.
Both goaltender's turned in stunning stops. At the 11:00 mark of the first, Schelling robbed Friar Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario) point black from a seated position. At roughly the same time of the second period, Lacasse stacked her pads to stone NU's Ann Doherty from just to the left of the slot.
The shutout was the 18th of Lacasse's career, a Providence school record.
Prior to Friday's contest, Providence honored the seven members of the Class of 2012 with the Senior Day Ceremony. The Friar seniors include Lacasse, c-captain Jen Friedman (San Gabriel, Calif.), Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.) Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.), Abby Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.), Christie Jensen (Delta, B.C.) and Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.)
The team also recognized Assistant Coach Bob Bellemore, who is retiring after 19 seasons with the Friars and seven championships.
These same two teams will rematch and wrap up the regular season on Sunday, February 19, at Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass. Face-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
