Box Score

The Providence College women's hockey team defeated the University of Connecticut, 3-1, on Sunday, February 17 at PC's Schneider Arena in an ECAC Eastern League game.

With the win, the Friars increased their third-place lead to three points ahead of fourth-place New Hampshire.

After a scoreless first period, the Friars opened the scoring at the midway point of the second period on a goal freshman Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.). The Huskies tied the game at 15:33 of the second period on a power-play goal by Megan McLeod. Just over three minutes later, senior Jackie Tamsin (Branford, Conn.) scored on the power play to give the Friars a 2-1 lead.

The Friars (16-11-3 overall, 10-5-2 ECAC Eastern) staved off a late UConn (11-17-3 overall, 7-10-1 ECAC Eastern) rally as Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) scored an empty net goal with 25 seconds remaining to secure the win. For Butsch, it was her team leading 15th goal of the season. Zimmerman, who scored two goals against UConn on Saturday, February 16, tallied one goal and one assist this afternoon. PC outshot UConn, 36-9. Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, R.I.) made 33 saves in net for the Huskies and Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) stopped eight shots in the win.

The Friars will play New Hampshire in a crucial home-and-home series beginning on Friday, February 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena. The following night, the Friars will play the Wildcats at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. In their first meeting this season (1/6/02), PC and UNH skated to a 2-2 tie at the Whittemore Center.
