STORRS, CONN. - No. 8/9 Providence College women's hockey traveled to No. 7 Connecticut and fell, 4-1. The defeat puts UConn and PC tied for first in the Hockey East standings with UConn holding the tie-breaker. UConn's Monique Weber tallied two goals in the first period and Providence never regained the lead. Junior Alyse Ruff (Tualatin, Ore.) score for PC and sophomore Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) made 21 saves.
UConn (19-7-5, 10-4-5-1 HE) quickly jumped on top with a goal just 43 seconds in off a wrist shot from Monique Weber from the right face off circle. The Huskies doubled the lead at 10:59 with a power-play goal when Weber tipped the puck past Lacasse after a shot from Cristin Allen at the left point. Connecticut held a 13-11 edge in shots and a decisive edge in face-offs, 18-4.
The Huskies made it 3-0 at 16:39 with a goal from Michelle Binning. The Friars (13-10-9, 9-5-5-3) had their best chance of the game at 19:30 when freshman Jessica Cohen (Anchorage, Alaska) took a pass from junior Alyse Ruff (Tualatin, Ore.) during a two-on-one but her shot went just wide. UConn goaltender Alexandra Garcia was forced to make eight saves while Lacasse stopped four in the period.
Providence earned a five-minute power-play when a Connecticut player was given a five minute major starting at 15:22 in the third period. The Friars capitalized at 7:51 when Ruff put home a rebound following a shot from Cohen. Sophomore Lauren Covell (Akron, Ohio) also assisted on the play. The goal was Ruff's 12th of the year with Cohen and Covell earning their 12th and seventh assists, respectively.
UConn added a fourth at 17:20 and Providence fell, 4-1. The Friars outshot UConn, 26-25, with Lacasse earning 21 saves and Garcia recording 25.
Providence will travel to Burlington, Vt. to finish the regular season series with a pair of games against Vermont. Game one starts on Friday, February 19 at 7:00 p.m. with game two on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
