Women's Ice Hockey Upended By No. 4/5 New Hampshire, 7-0
Feb. 11, 2007 Providence, R.I. - The Friars could not beat New Hampshire goaltender Melissa Bourdon, and the Wildcats struck for three power-play goals to beat the Friars, 7-0. Providence now stands at 13-13-4, and 10-4-3 in HOCKEY EAST play while UNH improves to 22-3-4 and 13-1-1 in HOCKEY EAST play. UNH commenced the scoring at 12:45 of the first period as Nicole Hekle was able to take a Jennifer Hitchcock pass and shoot it past Danielle Ciarletta (Blaine, Minn.) for what would turn out to be the game-winner. Micaela Long scored UNH's next goal at 16:04, with an assist from Kelly Paton, to give UNH a 2-0 lead at the first intermission. Providence generated several scoring opportunities early in the second period, including a near miss by Brittany Nelson (Shelburne, Vt.), who almost put in a rebound after Bourdon made a pad save on junior Jenna Keilch's (Clinton Township, Mich) initial shot. But UNH gained momentum as they were able to keep the Friars off of the scoreboard, and Steph Holmes registered a goal at the 8:07 mark of the second period, giving the Wildcats a comfortable 3-0 lead after two period of play. Holmes goal was assisted by Lindsey Caleo. UNH put the game out of reach in the third period, as they were able to score four goals in the period, including three of which came on the power-play. Hitchcock, with assists from Martine Garland and Sam Faber, put UNH up 4-0 at 2:49 with UNH's first power-play goal. Hekle scored her second goal of the game at 7:26 while on the power-play. The goal was assisted by Garland and Kacey Bellamy. UNH went up 6-0 just over a minute later at the 8:43 mark when Leah Craig notched the Wildcats' third power-play goal in a row, with assists going to Bellamy and Garland. UNH's Sadie Wright-Ward closed out the scoring for the visitors at 9:31. The goal was assisted by Holmes and Caleo.
The Friars return to action next weekend with a home-and-home series versus the Eagles of Boston College. The Friars host the Eagles in the first game of the weekend series on Saturday, February 17. The game, to be held at Schneider Arena, is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
