PROVIDENCE R.I. -- The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Boston University, 6-1, on Saturday, February 11, at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. With the win, Providence improves to 16-9-4 overall and 10-4-2 in HOCKEY EAST standings. Junior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) reached the 100-point century club while senior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) earned century club status in the assists department.

Prior to the game, Watrous boasted 99 career points on 51 goals and 48 assists. At 16:08 of the first period, Watrous entered the century club with a goal assisted by seniors Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) and Thatcher. The Friars kept the lead, 1-0, as they headed into the second period.

Payton scored back-to-back goals at 2:44 and 5:22 of the second period which were assisted by seniors Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) and Thatcher. At 11:15, Nicki Wiart prevented a shutout with power play goal assisted by Sarah Russell and Caitlyn Reddy. Providence held the advantage, 3-1, to end the second period.

At 00:52, Laffin netted a power play goal assisted by sophomore Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario) and Thatcher. With the assist, Thatcher earned her 100th career assist.

Freshman Erin Normore (Cambridge, Canada) netted her fifth goal of the season at 6:33. Thatcher earned her fourth assist on the night while Watrous was credited with her 20th of the season.

Sophomore Rachel Crissy (Naperville, Ill.) capped the Friar night with a goal at 14:21 with the assist from classmate Cherie Hendrickson (Boxford, Mass.).
 

 

The Friars slung a season-high 51 shots and held the Terriers to only 18. The Friars went one-for-three on the power play and four-for-five on the penalty kill.

Senior goalie Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) made 17 saves in net for the Friars, while Allyse Wilcox grabbed a game-high 45 for the Terriers.

Providence will hit the road to face top-ranked New Hampshire in the last game of the season series at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. Face-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
