Women's Hockey Defeated By No. 5 Northeastern, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College women’s hockey team was defeated by No. 5 Northeastern, 3-1. Two first period goals lifted the Huskies past the Friars. Providence moved to 9-19-1 (5-13-1 WHEA) and Northeastern improved to 25-4-1 (19-2-0 WHEA).

 

Madison Myers (Colchester, Vt.) started in net for the Friars and made 35 saves, marking a new career high.

 

Northeastern took a two-goal lead in the first period, with a goal from Kendall Coyne at 14:07. Denisa Krizova notched the Huskies’ second goal with five minutes to go in the first period.

 

The Friars struck on the power play, with a tip in goal from Christina Putigna (Grimsby, Ontario). Lexi Romanchuk (San Jose, Calif.) received a pass from Cassidy MacPherson (Oakville, Ontario) and took a slapshot from the center point that tipped off Putigna and past Northeastern’s Brittany Bugalski. The goal marked the freshman forward’s sixth power play goal of the season.

 

Northeastern stretched the lead to two goals, with 40 seconds remaining in the second period with a goal from Melissa Hagney.

 

The Friars outshot Northeastern 11 to nine in the third period, but neither team converted.


 

 

 

Providence killed five penalties to keep Northeastern from scoring a power play goal.

The Friars will continue Hockey East play on Feb. 7 at 2:00 p.m. in Storrs, Conn. to face the UConn Huskies.
