Women's Hockey Falls 2-1 In Overtime At Northeastern

BOSTON, Mass. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team was defeated by Northeastern, 2-1, in overtime on Friday night at Matthews Arena. Northeastern used a third period goal to tie the game at one (6:49) to force the extra period, and then capture the victory 38 seconds into overtime. With the loss the Friars now stand at 6-19-4 overall and 5-11-1 in the Hockey East while the Huskies improve to 9-14-4 on the season and 8-8-1 in conference play.

Senior Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.) netted the first goal of the game when she collected her own rebound to give the Friars a 1-0 lead at 17:34 of the first. The senior collected the puck from freshman Brooke Boquist (Thunder Bay, Ontario) in the neutral zone and then shot from the wing. She then crashed the net to pick up the rebound. Sophomore Kendra Goodrich (Apple Valley, Minn.) also registered an assist on the play. Junior Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.) stopped seven shots in the period while Northeastern's Chloe Desjardins recorded 11.

Both teams skated through a scoreless second period as Morse and Desjardins made six saves apiece in the stanza.

Northeastern's Melissa Haganey tied the game at one at 6:49 of the third when she was able to get the puck past Morse in a scrum in front of the net. Chelsiea Goll and Hayley Masters were credited with the assist. The rest of the period ended in a tie, forcing overtime.

In overtime, Haganey fed Masters in the crease where then she scored the game-winner 38 seconds into into the extra period. Heather Mottau also gathered an assist.

For the game, Morse tallied 23 saves while Desjardins made 26 stops.

Providence edged Northeastern in shots for the contest, 27-25. Each team when 0-for-3 on the power-play.

The Friars resume action next weekend in a home-and-home series against Boston University on Saturday, Feb. 14 and Sunday, Feb. 15. Saturday's game will start at 2:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena while Sunday's game will be played at 3:00 p.m. at Walter Brown Arena.
