PROVIDENCE, R.I. (February 5, 2005) -- The No. 10 Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Maine, 2-1, on Saturday, February 5 at the Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. The Friars improve to 18-1-2 all-time versus the Black Bears, winning six of their last seven games against Maine.

Both teams played strong defense, as they kept the score, 0-0, leading into the third period of play. The Friars were outshot, 21-15, in the first two periods.

In the third period, Maine's Abby Krause put the Black Bears on the scoreboard first with assists from Brigitte Laflamme and Amy Quiron at 3:42.

At 5:35, senior Rush Zimmerman netted her 15th goal of the season, eighth on the power play, that equalized and forced the game into overtime action, 1-1. Zimmerman was assisted by sophomore Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) and junior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.).

Within the first 37 seconds of play, Gigliotti fired a shot near the blue line that was deflected by Maine's netminder Rachel Gettings. Freshman Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario) passed the deflected puck to Thatcher who earned her third game-winning goal of the season.

The Friars were outshot, 27-26, and went 1-for-6 on the power play. Maine was unable to convert any goals on the power play as they went 0-for-5.

Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) posted a game-high 26 saves, while Gettings recorded 24.

The Friars will finish out their home series against Maine on Sunday, February 6 at Schneider Arena. Face-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
