PROVIDENCE R.I. -- The Providence College women's ice hockey team fell to New Hampshire, 2-1, on Wednesday, February 1 at PC's Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. With the loss, the Friars fell to 13-9-4 and 7-4-2 in HOCKEY EAST action.

Junior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) opened the game with a goal from the point at 4:31. Senior Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) saucered a pass to Gigliotti at the point for the even-strength goal. For the second straight game versus New Hampshire, the Friars held a 1-0 advantage to end the first period.

UNH's Leah Craig earned her 15th goal on the season when Martine Garland's point blank shot was saved and deflected by senior captain Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland). Craig slipped the puck past Bugden on the power play, the tied the game, 1-1. Jennifer Hitchcock and Garland were credited with the assists on the play.

The Wildcats put the game away in the third period with a short-hander by Sam Faber at 11:38. Sadie Wright-Ward was credited with the assist on the play.

Despite being outshot, 38-16, the Friars kept themselves in the game defensively. The Friars went 0-for-7 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.

Wildcat goalie Melissa Bourdon recorded 15 saves, while Bugden matched her career-high in saves with 36 in 58:30 minutes of action. The last time Bugden recorded 36 saves was two years exact to the date against New Hampshire at Schneider Arena on February 1, 2004.

The Friars will hit the road for back-to-back games versus Vermont on Saturday and Sunday, February 4-5 in Burlington, Vt. Both games are scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
