Women’s Hockey Defeated By Maine, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women’s ice hockey team was defeated by the Maine Black Bears, 3-1. Maine notched three second period goals and two power play goals to skate past the Friars. Providence moves to 8-18-1 (4-12-1 WHEA) and Maine improves to 8-18-2 (4-14-1 WHEA).

Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) scored her seventh goal of the season after forcing a turnover in the Friar defensive zone and creating a breakaway for herself. The junior slipped the puck past Maine’s Meghann Treacy. The Carels goal came with eight seconds remaining in the first period.

Maine scored less than two minutes into the second period, with a goal from Audra Richards.

The Black Bears tallied two power play goals later in the period, the first coming at 15:26 from Morgan Sakundiak. Maine’s third goal was scored by Alyson Matteau on a five-on-three at 19:20.

Despite outshooting the Black Bears 25 to 24, the Friars were unable to even the score.

Madison Myers (Colchester, Vt.) started in net for Providence and made 21 saves.

The Friars will close out the Hockey East series with the Black Bears on Jan. 31 at 2:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena.
