PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team fell to Mercyhurst College 4-2 in non-conference action Friday night at Schneider Arena, after entering the third period with a 2-0 lead.

The Friars started off the scoring as they made good on both of their man-up attempts, scoring two goals on two powerplays in the first period. Jessica Tabb scored her 11th goal of the season at the 16:10 mark, and Darlene Stephenson tallied her eighth goal to make the score 2-0 in favor of Providence with 17:27 on the clock in the first period.

Both teams were shutout in the second period before the Lakers of Mercyhurst came out on fire to score four unanswered goals to earn the 4-2 victory. C.J. Ireland scored just 1:37 into the third to make the score 2-1 and Lyndsay Barch tied the score at 2-2 less than three minutes later. The Laker's Seanna Murphy scored the remaining two goals to earn her team the victory. Murphy's game winning goal came off of an assist from K.C. Gallo at 13:12, and she followed with an insurance goal at the 16:43 mark to close out the attack.

Providence goalkeeper Amy Quinlan falls to 5-7-1 in the net. She played 58:18 minutes and registered 16 saves. Mercyhurst goaltender Tiffany Ribble registered 24 saves and raises her record to 8-5-2.

The Friars (12-8-3) and Lakers (11-14-2) will meet for the second game of the series tomorrow night (Saturday, January 27, 2001) at 7:00 p.m.
