Box Score

ORONO, MAINE - Maine senior Danielle Ward scored on a wrist shot at 2:19 of overtime to defeat Providence College women's ice hockey, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena.

For the sixth game in a row, the Friars scored first. At 5:00 of the opening period, two Black Bears collided at their own blue line, allowing Friar junior Nicole Anderson (Jordan, Minn.) to skate in and attack the net from the left side. Maine goalie Brittany Ott made the initial stop but Anderson followed with a backhand for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 PC advantage.

The Black Bears answered with a pair in the middle period. At 2:34, the host's Brianne Kilgour converted on a 2-on-1 break to knot the game, 1-1. Then, at 18:47 and the teams skating four-on-four, Black Bear junior Brittany Dougherty skated around the PC defense and went top shelf.

Providence tied the game, 2-2, midway through the third period. Senior Abby Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) and sophomore Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) executed a nifty give-and-go in the neutral zone, allowing Buie to skate forward with room. The sophomore then held the puck on her forehand before ripping home her tenth of the season from the slot.

Friar goaltender Genevieve Lacasse was brilliant in the waning moments of regulation, including one, fully extended glove save on Maine sophomore Kayla Kaluzny.

Lacasse finished with 38 saves. Ott made 26.

Providence returns home on Saturday, January 28 when it welcomes UConn to Schneider Arena for a 2 p.m. start. The game will serve as the Friars' annual Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer event and proceeds will benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. Also during Saturday's game, the Friars will mark ten years in the Women's Hockey East Association by recognizing their Tenth Anniversary Team.
