PROVIDENCE, R.I. - UNH forward Molly Morrison scored 5:19 into the third period to lead her Wildcats past the ninth-ranked Providence College women's ice hockey team, 2-1, Saturday night at Schneider Arena.
With the game knotted, 1-1, Morrison intercepted the puck to the left of the slot. The senior winger slid a forehand through a maze of legs and into the back of the net for the eventual game-winner.
Providence, who had beaten UNH in five straight contests, took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period. At the 9:36 mark, freshman defenseman Rebecca Morse (Westfield, N.J.) blasted a slapshot from the left point. The rebound kicked to Friar co-captain Jean O'Neill, who deposited her sixth of the season.
UNH answered seven minutes later, with Sarah Campbell converting on a rebound from the left of the doorstep.
PC goaltender Genevieve Lacasse made 17 saves in the effort, while counterpart Lindsey Minton stopped 31 Friar shots.
The Friars return to action next Friday, January 21 when they host No. 6 Boston College at Schneider Arena. Face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. It is the annual Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer game, with proceeds benefitting the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. Tickets are available by calling the PC ticket office at (401) 865 GO PC.
