BOSTON, MASS. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team fell to Dartmouth, 3-2, Tuesday at Fenway Park in Boston.
With the score knotted, 2-2, just 1:14 remaining in regulation and temperatures dipping into the 30's, Dartmouth's Camille Dumais flipped home her own rebound, just out of the reach of Friar goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario). The power play goal would hold as the game-winner in front of the Fenway crowd.
The contest was part of the 2012 Sun Life Frozen Fenway Festivities.
The Friars took the initial, 1-0 lead at 11:09 of the opening period. Freshman Brooke Simpson (Boxboro, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal by redirecting a blast from the point, a slap shot from senior co-captain Jen Friedman (San Gabriel, Calif.).
Dartmouth answered midway through the second, as junior Sasha Nanji hammered home a rebound from just to the left of the goaltender. The game advanced to the second intermission, 1-1.
The Big Green took a 2-1 edge at 8:47 of the third, courtesy a Karlee Odland score off a Dumais feed. Providence responded, this time at 15:47. With a skater advantage, sophomore Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) tipped home another Friedman slapshot for her ninth of the season.
Lacasse, having just arrived from playing in Germany for Team Canada's Under 22/Development Team, made 28 saves. Dartmouth's Lindsay Holdcroft halted 18.
The game marked the second time the Friar program has skated outside. Last season, PC defeated UConn, 4-3, at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, January 15, with their second consecutive neutral site contest. Providence will face Northeastern at the Bog Skating Rink in Kingston, Mass. Face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
