ITHACA, N.Y. - The Providence College women’s hockey team defeat the Cornell Big Red on Jan. 6, 2017 at Lynah Rink in Ithaca, N.Y. The Friars scored two second period goals and shut out Cornell to win, 2-0. Providence improves to 10-10-1 and Cornell moves to 8-5-1 overall.

Clare Minnerath (Sartell, Minn.) recorded her first collegiate start and made seven saves in the opening period. Her first save of the game came eight minutes into the period when Cornell’s Kaitlin Doering skated in on a breakaway.

Kathleen McHugh (Billerica, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal at 8:26 in the second period. Brooke Boquist (Thunder Bay, Ont.) rushed into the offensive zone and took a hard shot that rebounded to Chirstina Putigna (Grimsby, Ont.) just outside the post. Putigna tipped the puck to a breaking McHugh in the high slot for her first goal and the eventual game winner.

Just under four minutes later Boquist added her second point of the game, shooting through traffic in the front of the net for a 2-0 Friar lead. Whitney Dove (Port Moody, British Columbia) dumped the puck to Blair Parent (Blaine, Minn.) in the corner. Parent fed Boquist in the slot, whose shot snuck through Cornell’s Paula Voorheis.

Minnerath finished the game with 26 saves and helped the Friars kill off six penalties. The freshman net-minder recorder her first start and first shutout in the game.

The Friars and Big Red will finish the non-conference series on Jan. 7 at 3:00 p.m. at Lynah Rink.
