Women's Hockey Defeats Cornell, 3-2

ITHACA, N.Y. - Kerstin Matthews scored two goals in the third period to lead the Providence College Friars to a 3-2 win against Cornell in women's ECAC hockey action on Sunday, Jan. 3 at Cornell's Lynah Rink.

The Friars got on the scoreboard first as Jessica Tabb scored the only goal of the first period at the 11:10 mark. Jenel Bode and Colette Bredin each notched one goal for Cornell in the second period as the the Big Red took a 2-1 lead.

Matthews evened the game for PC (2-2) with her first goal of the third period at the 2:01 mark. Two minutes and five seconds later, Matthews tallied the game-winning goal off a feed from Holley Tyng.

PC sophomore goaltender Sara DeCosta played strong in net for the Friars, recording 39 saves.

With the win, Providence raised its record to 7-3-2 overall and 6-3-2 in ECAC action, while Cornell fell to 6-6 overall and 5-5 in league play.

Providence College will return to action against Maine on Jan. 8 at 7:00 p.m. in Orono, Maine.
