Box Score

Orono, Maine - The No. 8/9 Providence College women's ice hockey team saw its five-game winning streak snapped Monday at Maine, falling to the host Black Bears, 3-2.

Maine jumped on top in the first period. At the 9:09 mark, freshman Kayla Kaluzny skated around the Friar net to the right of the doorstep before scoring top-shelf for a 1-0 Black Bear advantage. Just over four minutes later, Maine extended the cushion to 2-0. Sophomore Brittany Dougherty stole the puck at the left face-off circle and beat the goalie short side for her team-leading 11th of the season.

The Friars cut the deficit to 2-1 with the lone score of the middle period. Junior Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.) got possession just outside the Maine blueline and played the puck nicely off the boards to classmate Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.). Cottrell skated in and beat Maine goalie Brittany Ott from the right face-off circle for her seventh strike of the season.

Maine's Jennie Gallo gave the hosts a 3-1 lead midway through the third, poking in a rebound off a Myriam Croussette shot from the left circle.

Providence responded moments later. Junior Jennifer Friedman fired a slapshot from the left point that was saved. Freshman Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) flipped the rebound home with a backhand for her second of the weekend and eighth of the year. Despite pulling the goalie for an extra attacker in the waning moments, the Friars were unable to get the equalizer, and lost for the first time since November 21.

Freshman netminder Nina Riley (Lexington, Mass.), playing in her collegiate debut, made several quality stops and finished with 27 saves.

The Friars return to action on Sunday, January 9 with a visit to third-ranked Boston University. Face-off is at 3 p.m. PC's next home game is Saturday, January 15. New Hampshire will come to Schneider Arena for a 7 p.m. start. Tickets are available by calling the Providence College ticket office at (401) 865 GOPC.
