ORONO, MAINE - Goaltender Christina England (Wareham, Mass.) earned her first career victory as the Providence College women's ice hockey team upended host Maine, 2-1, Sunday night at Alfond Arena.
The Friars opened the scoring 8:08 into the first period. Freshman Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) skated out from the left corner and fired, from a tough angle, a rising wrist shot over the goalie's shoulder. It was Buie's seventh of the season.
Providence extended the edge to 2-0 with the lone goal of the middle period. Junior Jen Friedman (San Gabriel) rocketed a rising slapshot from just inside the blue line at 3:56 for her fifth score of the season.
Maine cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third period when Dominique Goutsis deposited a rebound at the 3:13 mark. The Friars made several plays defensively in the third period to preserve the victory, the highlight of which came with seven and a half left to play. Maine's Brittany Dougherty stole the puck behind the Friar goal and attempted a wrap around into a yawning net. PC senior co-captain Alyse Ruff dove across the crease at the final moment, reaching the shaft of her stick just ahead of the puck to prevent the tying score.
Providence also killed roughly one minute's worth of a 5 on 3 disadvantage in the final minutes of regulation.
England made 12 saves to earn the decision, stopping several quality chances including a Dougherty breakaway with the right pad late in the second period.
The game marked the first time since February 20, 2009 that someone other than junior Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) started in net for the Friars. Lacasse is currently playing for Hockey Canada's Under 22 Select team in the MLP Cup in Switzerland. She had made 57 consecutive starts for PC.
The Friars visit the Black Bears again tomorrow for a 3 p.m. face-off at Alfond Arena. PC's next home game is Saturday, January 15 when New Hampshire arrives at Schneider Arena. Start time is 7 p.m. and tickets are available by calling the (401) 865 GOPC.
