Manon van Weezel Earns Longstreth/NFHCA All-America Honors

Dec. 5, 2017

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College freshman field hockey player Manon van Weezel (Waalre, Holland) has been named to the 2017 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-America Third Team. The announcement was made by the National Field Hockey Coaches’ Association (NFHCA) on Dec. 5.

Van Weezel is the 12th field hockey player to earn All-America honors at Providence College in the program’s 42-year history. The 12 honorees have combined to earn All-America recognition a total of 18 times. The Friars also have had at least one All-American in three of the last four years. Additionally, van Weezel is just the second freshman in program history to earn All-America honors, joining two-time BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Rachel Chamberlain ‘10. Chamberlain was selected as a Third Team All-American at the conclusion of her rookie season with the Friars in 2006.

Van Weezel is one of just two freshmen in the nation to earn All-America honors, joining Virginia’s Pien Dicke, who is on the First-Team. She also is one of seven players from the BIG EAST Conference to be named an All-American, with five of those student-athletes coming from 2017 NCAA Champion Connecticut.

Van Weezel, who started all 19 games at left back for the Friars as a rookie, led the team in scoring with 13 points on four goals and a team-best five assists. Two of her goals were game winners, including the winning tally against BIG EAST foe Georgetown to defeat the Hoyas, 4-3, on Oct. 13. She also collected a team-best two defensive saves.

During the regular-season, van Weezel earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week accolades three times (Sept. 4, Sept. 18 and Oct. 16). At the conclusion of the 2016 campaign, van Weezel was tabbed BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and was a unanimous selection on the All-BIG EAST First Team. Most recently, she earned Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Northeast Region First Team honors (Nov. 27) and Synapse Sports 2017 All-Rookie Team recognition (Dec. 4).
