Mary O'Reilly And Manon Van Weezel Earn BIG EAST Weekly Honors For Field Hockey

Oct. 16, 2017

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College field hockey was well-represented among the list of BIG EAST weekly award winners on Monday, Oct. 16. Sophomore midfielder Mary O’Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.) was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and defender Manon van Weezel (Waalre, Holland) was tabbed BIG EAST Freshman of the Week.

O’Reilly earned Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career at Providence. She was previously named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll during the 2016 season as a freshman (Oct. 31, 2016). Last week, O’Reilly was a factor in two game-winning goals. On Oct. 13, she assisted on the game-winning goal with 5:00 minutes left in regulation to defeat Georgetown, 4-3, in a critical BIG EAST game. On Oct. 15, she scored the game-winning goal in a non-conference victory over Dartmouth.

Van Weezel earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors for the third time this season, having previously gotten the nod on Sept. 4 and Sept. 18. She tallied two goals in the Friars’ 4-3 victory over BIG EAST foe Georgetown on Oct. 13, including the game winner with 5:00 minutes left in regulation. On Oct. 15, van Weezel played a key role in the defensive unit, that held the Big Green scoreless through the first 66 minutes of play.

Providence is currently 10-5 overall, including a 4-1 mark in league play. The Friars are alone in second place in the BIG EAST standings with two regular-season conference games remaining on the schedule. Providence returns to action on Friday, Oct. 20 against BIG EAST for Liberty, who checks in with a 3-2 mark (T-3rd) in the conference. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN3/WatchESPN and is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
