PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
Providence College junior field hockey player Caitlin Malone (Ossining, N.Y.) was named BIG EAST Conference Offensive Player of the Week on October 15. Senior goalkeeper Kathi Weidman (Millersville, Pa.) also was recognized on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. The duo helped guide the Providence field hockey team to a 2-0 record last week with victories over Vermont (4-2) on October 8 and BIG EAST foe Villanova (1-0) on October 13.
Malone was the catalyst for the Friars on offense as she recorded two goals in the victory over Vermont. She followed that performance with the game-winning goal against Villanova in a pivotal BIG EAST match-up. Malone leads the Friars this season in point (22) and goals (eight). She also ranks second on the team in assists (six). She is the first Friar to score 20+ points in a single season since the 2009 campaign, when three members of the team achieved the feat (Nellie Poulin 30, Ashlyn Hudson 25 and Adrienne Marois 20).
Weidman was the goalkeeper of record in each of the Friars' victories last week. She collected six saves in the win over Vermont and four in the shut-out victory against Villanova. It marked her second career shutout, and first over a BIG EAST opponent. For the week, Weidman posted a 1.00 goals against average and a 0.833 save percentage.
Providence returns to action on Tuesday, October 16 against cross-city rival Brown. The game will be played at Brown University in Providence, R.I. at 4:00 p.m. The Friars return home to Lennon Family Field on Friday, October 19 against BIG EAST Conference opponent Rutgers at 7:00 p.m. Live streaming video of the Friars' match-up against Rutgers will be available at www.Friars.com.
