The Providence College field hockey team will host BIG EAST foe and 2nd-ranked Connecticut on Saturday, October 5 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The game is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.
The Friars enter Saturday's game against UConn with a 5-5 overall record and a 1-1 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. During league action, Providence defeated Georgetown, 5-0, on September 20 and fell to Old Dominion, 2-1, in overtime on September 27.
Daniella Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) leads the Friars in scoring with 28 points on 13 goals and two assists. Her 13 goals are the most by a Friar in a single season since 2009. That year, Nellie Poulin `10 recorded 14 goals in 20 games. Additionally, Bernasconi's 28 points are the most since 2009, when Poulin finished the year with 30. In the Friars' most recent game against Brown on October 2, Bernasconi recorded her second hat trick of the season (and career) in a 5-1 victory.
Overall, seven different Friars have scored at least one goal this season and 11 players have recorded at least one assist.
Junior goalkeeper Deidra Clymer (South Windsor, Conn.) has played 720 minutes in goal for Providence and owns a 1.46 goals against average and a 0.766 save percentage.
Upon completion of the Friars' match against Connecticut, the squad will hit road to face BIG EAST foe Temple on Friday, October 11. After facing Temple, the team will play three of its next four games at home on Lennon Family Field.
#2 CONNECTICUT (9-0)... The University of Connecticut field hockey team enters Saturday's game against Providence with a 9-0 overall record and a 2-0 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. The Huskies are one of just two undefeated teams in NCAA Division I field hockey. Maryland, who sits at 10-0 on the year, is the second.
Four members of the team have eclipsed double-digit points through nine games. Chloe Hunnable leads the way with 18 points on eight goals and two assists. Roisin Upton is second on the team in scoring with 15 points on five goals and a team-best five assists. Marie Elena Bolles and Anne Jeute each have 14 points on five goals and four assists.
Sarah Mansfield has played 651 minutes in the cage for UConn and owns a 0.97 goals against average and a 0.809 save percentage. She has allowed just nine goals and has recorded 38 saves.
Connecticut has out-shot its opponents, 174-83, and hold a 77-44 advantage in penalty corners. The Huskies have shutout four of their nine opponents. - FRIARS -
