PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team will resume BIG EAST Conference play on Friday, Sept. 22 against Villanova. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Villanova Field Hockey Field in Conshohocken, Pa.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE (5-3, 1-0 BIG EAST): The Providence College field hockey team enters the weekend with a 5-3 overall record and a 1-0 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. The Friars are in the midst of a two-game winning streak, having captured victories over BIG EAST foe Temple (4-2) on Sept. 15 and non-conference opponent UC Davis (5-2) on Sept. 17. Two of the Friars’ three losses this season have come against nationally-ranked teams, then-No. 14 Northwestern (4-0) and then-No. 8 Boston College (4-0).
Freshman defender Manon van Weezel (Waalre, Holland), who has been recognized on two occasions as BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, leads the team in scoring with nine points on two goals and a team-best five assists. Senior midfielder Megan Hamilton (Warrington, Pa.) and sophomore Mikayla Michals (Needham, Mass.) each own six points on the year. Hamilton has recorded three goals, while Michals checks in with two goals and two assists.
Ten Friars have scored at least one goal this season through eight games, including six players who have notched multiple goals. The underclassmen (freshmen/sophomores) on the roster have combined to score 36 of the Friars’ 50 points on 11 goals and 14 assists.
Senior goalkeeper Megan Guilbert (Morganville, N.J.) has played 565 minutes in the cage and has recorded a 2.23 goals against average and a 0.647 save percentage. She logged her lone shut-out of the year against then-No. 24 Maine, 1-0, on Aug. 25. It marked her fourth career shut-out victory and first against a nationally-ranked opponent.
SCOUTING VILLANOVA (2-6, 0-1 BIG EAST): The Villanova field hockey team enters Friday’s game with a 2-6 overall record, including an 0-1 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. The Wildcats started the season with four-consecutive losses, but have earned victories in two of their last four games. Villanova claimed a 2-1 win over Fairfield in its most recent game on Sept. 20. Abby Siana tallied the game-winning goal with 2:35 remaining in regulation off a feed from Allison Sayia.
In the Wildcat’s lone BIG EAST game of the year, the squad fell to Liberty, 3-0, in Lynchburg, Va. Liberty, who started the season ranked No. 25 in the NFHCA National Poll, out-shot Villanova, 26-7, and held a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners. Erika Miller recorded 10 saves in goal for the Wildcats.
Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Francesca Bello leads the Villanova offense with nine points on three goals and three assists. Lydia Sydnor is second in scoring with eight points on a team-best four goals. The duo combined for five of their goals during a 7-1 drubbing of LIU Brooklyn on Sept. 8. Bello notched a hat trick, while Sydnor tallied two goals.
Three of the Wildcats’ six losses this season have been decided by one goal, including two overtime matches. One of those overtime losses came at the hands of Saint Joseph’s (2-1, OT), who is currently ranked No. 21 in the latest NFHCA Division I Coaches’ Poll.
