Manon van Weezel Named BIG EAST Freshman Of The Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College freshman defender Manon van Weezel (Waalre, Holland) was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for field hockey on Monday, Sept. 18. It marks the second time this season that van Weezel has earned Freshman of the Week accolades. Additionally, sophomore forward Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) was recognized on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

The Friars' rookie notched a total of five points in two games last week with two goals and one assist. In Providence's BIG EAST opener against Temple (Sept. 15), she was credited with an assist on the game-tying goal in the second half (2-2), en route to a 4-2 victory. On Sept. 17, van Weezel notched the first two goals of her collegiate career against UC Davis, including what proved to be the game winner. On the defensive side of the ball, van Weezel played key role on the Friars' back line, holding their two opponents to a combined total of 15 shots (7.5 spg).

Mendez scored the first points of her collegiate career this weekend on two goals and one assist (five points). She tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal (the first goal of her career) in the BIG EAST opener vs. Temple. She followed with one goal and one assist in Providence's 5-2 victory over UC Davis. Mendez took a total of two shots last week and scored on both of them.

Providence College returns to action on Friday, Sept. 22 against BIG EAST foe Villanova. The game will be played at the Villanova Field Hockey Field in Conshohocken, Pa. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
