Sept. 18, 2008

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The BIG EAST office announced the list of host sites for the league's 2009-10 and 2010-11 BIG EAST Olympic Sport Championship schedule on Wednesday, September 17. Providence is among the list of host institutions, as the College has been awarded the 2009 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship.

The 2009 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship is slated for November 7-8, and will be held at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. The $6-million, state-of-the-art facility is home to the Friars' field hockey and lacrosse programs and opened its doors in August of 2005.

Since its opening, Providence has catapulted into the national spotlight, and has become a proven power in BIG EAST field hockey. During the last two seasons, the complex has provided a distinct home-field advantage for the Friars as PC has posted a 12-5 record at home, including a 5-1 mark in BIG EAST Conference regular-season play. This season (2008), the Friars are 2-0 at the venue.

The 2009 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship will be the first league tournament held on Providence's campus since 1993, when the Friar athletic department hosted the BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship.
