Manon van Weezel Named BIG EAST Freshman Of The Week

Sept. 4, 2017

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College field hockey player Manon van Weezel (Waalre, Holland) was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week today [Sept. 4]. It marked the first weekly league honor of van Weezel’s young career with the Friars. Senior midfielder Megan Hamilton (Warrington, Pa.) also was recognized by the conference as a member of the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

A defender, van Weezel scored her first career points in a 3-2 victory over cross-city rival Brown Saturday afternoon, when she connected with Hamilton on the team’s first penalty corner of the day. Then on Sunday afternoon, van Weezel had a hand in two of Providence's three goals overall, leading Providence past its intra-state rival Bryant. Her second assist of the game led to the Friars’ game-winning tally with 18 seconds left in regulation, earning PC a 3-2 victory.

Hamilton notched her first multi-goal game of the season, as she led Providence to a 3-2 victory over Brown University with two goals. Hamilton scored on each of her two shot attempts during the contest. With her two goals, she moved in to a tie for 14th-place on the Friars all-time career goals list and cracked the top-20 on Providence's all-time scoring list (63 points).

The Friars (3-1) return to action on Friday, Sept. 8 against regional foe Northeastern. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
