Mikayla Michals Earns Invitation To USA Field Hockey U-21 Junior National Camp

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College rising sophomore field hockey player Mikayla Michals (Needham, Mass.) completed play at the 2017 Young Women’s National Championship today [June 16]. The five-day event was held at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa. The YWNC afforded nearly 130 athletes the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of coaches and selectors in order to progress within the Olympic Development pipeline.

Upon completion of the Young Women’s National Championship, Michals was invited to compete at USA Field Hockey U-21 Junior National Camp, which is scheduled for June 17-20 at Spooky Nook. Michals is one of 33 players to earn a spot at the U-21 Junior National Camp, while 34 other players were selected to participate in Development Squad National Camp (21+).

As a rookie for the Friars in 2016, Michals played 18 games and appeared in the starting line-up, once, during the team’s 2-1 victory over cross-city rival Brown on Oct. 18. Michals finished the season with four points on two goals. Her first collegiate goal came against Sacred Heart (Aug. 27). She also scored a goal in the Friars’ 3-2 overtime victory against BIG EAST foe Georgetown (Oct. 14). Michals attempted eight shots during the 2016 campaign and landed seven on cage for a shots-on-goal percentage of .875.

Prior to her arrival at Providence College, Michals attended The Gunnery, where she was a two-time WNEPSFHA All-Star and Most Valuable Player (2014, 2015). Michals tallied 46 points during her high school career on 18 goals and 10 assists.
