Student-Athletes Katie Willett And Paul Reilly Honored At Mal Brown Awards Night

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College senior student-athletes Katie Willett (Biddeford, Maine) and Paul Reilly (Loughrea, Ireland) were honored at the Mal Brown Club Awards Night on Saturday, April 27. The awards night was sponsored by the Greater Providence Chapter of the Providence College Alumni Association "Mal Brown Club," and was held in '64 Hall on the campus of Providence College.

Willett, a member of the field hockey team, received the Helen Bert Award. The award is presented annually to a female senior varsity athlete who has achieved an outstanding level of performance in academics and athletics during her undergraduate career at Providence College. Willett, registered a career high in goals (two), assists (three) and points (7) during her senior season, as the Friars' starting centerback and team captain. She was named 2001 STX/NFHCA First Team Regional All-American and First Team All-BIG EAST for her efforts. Willett also earned NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad honors for the third time in her career. She is a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star. In 1999-00, she earned GTE Academic All-District Fall/Winter At-Large Second Team honors, and was a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection during her sophomore and junior seasons. In 1998, Willett was named to the BIG EAST Rookie Team. Willett is a Marketing major and currently holds a cumulative GPA of 3.88 through the fall semester. Willett will graduate in May and will begin an internship this summer with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in Indianapolis, Indiana. A native of Biddeford, Maine, she is the daughter of Kathleen and Michael Willett.

Reilly, a member of the cross country and track teams, received the Joseph V. MacAndrew Award. The award is presented to a male senior varsity athlete who has achieved an outstanding level of performance in academics and athletics during his undergraduate career at Providence College. Reilly, a three-time All-BIG EAST Cross Country performer, has established himself as one of Providence College's top runners. He recently qualified for the IC4A Men's Track and Field Championship in the 5,000 meter run, with a 12th-place finish (14:15.64) at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, California on April 20. Prior to the 2002 outdoor track season, Reilly earned 1999 Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic honors, 2001 Spring Men's At-Large Verizon Academic All-District I honors, won the 3,000 meters at the 2001 IC4A Indoor Championship, finished second in the 5,000 meters at the 2001 IC4A Outdoor Championship, was a scoring member of the 2000 men's cross country team that finished third at the NCAA Cross Country Championship and ran the 5,000 meters at the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Championship. Reilly also competed for Ireland in the 2002 World Cross Country Championship in Dublin, Ireland. Reilly is a management major and has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.49. He is a native of Loughrea, Ireland and is the son of Gerard and Marie Reilly.
