Two Providence Field Hockey Players Earn 2002-03 NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad Honors
March 6, 2003 PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior Kara Lukens (Pennsburg, Pa.) and freshman Katharine Lary (Canaan, N.H.) have been selected to the 2002-03 NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad. The announcement was made by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association on Monday, March 3, 2003. Qualified student-athletes must have attained a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 through the first semester of the 2002-03 academic year. Lukens, a three-year letterwinner and senior captain of the Friar field hockey team, scored a career-high four goals and added one assist for nine points during the 2002 season. She anchored PC's defense, and finished the year tied for first on the team with two defensive saves. Lukens finished her career at Providence with 12 points on five goals and two assists. In 2001, Lukens earned All-BIG EAST Second-Team honors and was named a STX/NFHCA Second-Team Regional All-American. Lukens earned All-BIG EAST honors for the second time in her career on November 7 as a member of the First Team. Lukens recently was awarded the BIG EAST/Aeropostale post-graduate scholarship. Lukens graduated with a degree in biology and chemistry arts in December 2002, and recorded a cumulative grade-point average of 3.72. A native of Pennsburg, Pa., she is the daughter of Allen and Carolyn Lukens. Lary played in nine games for the Friars as a forward and midfielder. In her first semester at Providence College Lary recorded a 3.71 grade-point average, while studying political science. Lary also is a member of the Providence College ROTC. A native of Canaan, N.H., she is the daughter of Eileen and Ken Lary. The Friars finished the 2002 season with an 8-12 overall record and a 1-4 mark in the BIG EAST Conference.
