Six Friar Field Hockey Players Named To NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad

Six members of the 2004 Providence College field hockey team have been named to the NFHCA Division I National Academic Team. Senior Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.), junior Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.), sophomore Noel Mahlstadt (Farmingville, N.Y.), sophomore Colleen Walsh (South Easton, Mass.), sophomore Jessica Weinstein (Bridgeton, N.J.) and freshman Liz Cherry (Wilmington, N.C.) all earned recognition.
The NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad program recognizes those student athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2004-05 academic year. Phillips earns the honor for the second time in her career at Providence. On the field, Phillips played 17 games for the Friars and finished third among her teammates in scoring with 23 points on 11 goals and one assist. A native of Worcester, Mass., she is the daughter of Lee and Juanita Phillips and Cynthia Brown. Lary is a three-time NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad selection. Lary played 20 games this season and finished second among her teammates in scoring. Lary notched eight goals and eight assists in her third season with PC. A native of Canaan, N.H., she is the daughter of Eileen and Ken Lary. Mahlstadt earns NFHCA Division I National Academic honors for the second-straight season. She appeared in 12 games as a defender during her sophomore season, and nailed down a starting position in PC's final four contests of the 2004 schedule. A native of Farmingville, N.Y., she is the daughter of Christine and Eugene Mahlstadt. Walsh, a sophomore forward on the field hockey squad, played five games for the Friars. Walsh earns NFHCA academic honors for the second-consecutive year. A native of South Easton, Mass., she is the daughter of Jamie and Ryan Walsh. Weinstein and Cherry were named to the NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad for the first time in their careers. Weinstein played 18 games for the Friars and scored six points on two goals and two assists. A native of Bridgeton, N.J., she is the daughter of Donna and Ben Weinstein. Cherry is the lone freshman to earn recognition for her academic efforts by the NFHCA. She played nine games in her first collegiate season of field hockey at PC. A native of Wilmington, N.C., she is the daughter of Beth and Bob Cherry.
