PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College field hockey program is currently in the midst of it's spring season, and gearing up for an exciting 2013 campaign. During the spring, the program will feature a "Meet The Friars" section right here on Friars.com. In this third installment of "Meet The Friars", let's take a look at freshman Salene Shaffer.
Salene recently completed her first season with the Friars and appeared in 17 games. She also is one of four freshmen on the team to see time in the starting line-up (4 games). Salene is a midfielder from Millerstown, Pennsylvania, where she attended Greenwood High School. While at Greenwood, she racked up 110 career points on 37 goals and 36 assists and earned First-Team All-State honors.
1. Why did you decide to come to Providence College?
When I stepped on campus I knew this was the school that was the best fit for me. When I first started looking at schools I didn't want to go far from home, but when I came here and fell in love with the campus it didn't matter how far from home it was. Everyone here is so friendly and it's so easy to feel right at home.
2. What is your ideal pregame meal and why?
My pregame meal consists of chicken and pasta because it provides me with enough energy for the game.
3. If you could be any cartoon character, what/who would you be? Why?
If I could be any cartoon character I would be the roadrunner because I always like to be active.
4. Who has had the most influence on your life, and why?
My dad has had the most influence on me in my life because he is the most competitive person I know. He pushes me to do my best and to never give up. Since he played sports and raced sprint cars he has the mentality of wanting to win all the time. That's where I got that mentality from.
