STORRS, CONN. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to third-ranked Syracuse, 3-1, in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship on November 8 in Storrs, Conn. The Friars conclude their season with a 12-9 overall record, while the Orange improve to 19-1 on the year.

The Orange got on the board first as Maggie Befort knocked home a rebound off a penalty corner just 4:04 into the game. Providence tied the score, 1-1, at 12:32 mark off a penalty corner option. Junior Jessica Lane (South Windsor, Conn.) ripped a shot into the back of the cage off a feed from junior Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.). It marked Lane's third goal of the season. The Orange took a 2-1 lead heading into halftime as Shannon Taylor netted her 29th goal of the season on a direct shot off a penalty corner with 2:21 left in the first half. Befort and Martina Loncarica were credited with assists on the play.

The Orange took a two-goal lead (3-1) in the 48th minute as Kristin Girouard deflected the ball into the cage off a free hit situation. Anne-Sophie Van der Post was credited with the assist after driving the ball into the circle.

Junior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) finished with 10 saves on the day, while Syracuse's Heather Hess stopped four shots in the game.
