STORRS, Conn. -- The Providence College Friars defeated Rutgers University, 2-1, in the Semifinals of the BIG EAST Field Hockey Tournament at Storrs, Conn., on Friday, November 3. With the win, the Friars advance to the BIG EAST Championship game against Connecticut on Sunday, November 5 at Noon at Storrs.

The Friars got on the scoreboard first when junior Katie Willett (Biddeford, Maine) scored with 21:40 remaining in the first half. The Scarlet Knights evened the game at 1-1 when Andschana Mendes (Lebanon, N.J.) scored with 14:16 left in the first half.

Senior Jamie Lerch (Medway, Mass.) tallied the game-winning goal for PC with 13:36 remaining in the game.

PC senior goalkeeper Heather Tattersall registered seven stops in the win. Rutgers senior goalkeeper Abby Joseph (Linwood, N.J.) recorded seven saves in the loss.

With the win, Providence improved to 7-14 overall, while Rutgers finished its season with an 8-11 mark.

The Friars advance to the BIG EAST Championship Game for the fifth time since 1989. The team will be trying to win its third BIG EAST title and first since 1991.
