CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Boston University, 2-0, at MIT in Cambridge, Mass. on Friday, October 30. It marked the Friars' fourth-consecutive victory and their third-straight shut-out win. Senior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Mass.) sealed the victory for Providence with 11 saves. It marked her 50th career win and 20th shutout, since joining the Friars in 2006.

Providence took a 1-0 lead 22:17 into the game as junior Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) recorded her eighth goal of the season. She earned the goal with a deflection off an initial shot taken by junior Kelly Grogan (Allenwood, N.J.). Grogan was credited with the assist on the play and has scored at least one point in six of the Friars' last seven games. Providence took its 1-0 lead into halftime.

At the 40:31 mark, Providence took a 2-0 advantage as senior Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) scored her team-best 14th goal of the year. Poulin found the back of the cage after deflecting a shot taken by senior Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.). With the assist, Marois keeps her point-scoring streak intact at seven straight games. Poulin's goal marked the 49th tally of her career at Providence, giving her sole possession of fourth place on the Friars' all-time goals list. She remains seventh on PC's all-time scoring list with 110 points, just four points shy of Melissa McGow '07, who tallied 114 points from 2003-2006 (35 goals/44 assists).

Boston University outshot Providence 18-9 on the day and also held a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners. With 12:58 remaining in the game, the Terriers pulled their goalkeeper to get an extra attacker on the field. Despite the additional offensive pressure applied by the Terriers, Chamberlain and the rest of the Friar defense held strong to keep Boston University off the scoreboard.

The victory marks the first for Providence over Boston University since defeating the Terriers, 1-0, during the 2006 season.

The Friars conclude their regular-season schedule on Sunday, November 1 against Vermont. The game will be played in Burlington, Vt. and is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
