HARTFORD, CONN. - The Providence College field hockey team was defeated by sixth-ranked Connecticut, 6-0, in a BIG EAST Conference match-up on Saturday, October 30, 2004 in Hartford, Conn. The game marked the regular-season finale for both teams. The Friars now own a 10-10 overall record and finish BIG EAST play with a 1-4 mark. Uconn improves to 18-1 overall and 5-0 in the BIG EAST.

The Huskies scored two goals in the first half. Laura Puddle netted UConn's first goal of the afternoon 13 minutes into the game off an assist from Lauren Henderson. Katie Cavanagh put the Huskies up, 2-0, at the 24:15 mark off an assist from Puddle.

In the second half, Cavanagh got things going for the Huskies with her second goal of the afternoon, unassisted, at 42:26. Henderson then scored two-consecutive goals to give Connecticut a 5-0 lead. Henderson's first goal was scored off a direct shot on a penalty corner 45:27 into the game. The goal was assisted by Puddle and Abby Ostruzka. Henderson's second goal was unassisted at the 57:42 mark. Ostruszka added an insurance goal for UConn with just 17-seconds remaining in the game on a penalty stroke.
 

 

The Huskies out-shot Providence, 34-9 and held the advantage on penalty corners, 13-5.

Senior goalkeeper Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) recorded 12 saves in the loss for PC. Melissa Bostwick made four saves in goal for Connecticut.

Providence College (10-10, 1-4 BIG EAST) will await notification of a berth to the ECAC Field Hockey Championship. Selections to the championship will be announced on November 8. The ECAC Championship will be held on November 13-14. The site for the 2004 championship also will be determined on November 8.
