Field Hockey Falls To Georgetown, 3-2, In Overtime

    PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to BIG EAST foe Georgetown, 3-2, in overtime on Saturday, October 29 in Providence, R.I. It marked the third overtime game this season for the Friars, who were previously unbeaten in overtime matches.

    Georgetown got on the scoreboard first at the 32:04 mark as Charlotte Tierney and Catherine Shugrue led a 2-on-1 breakaway against the Friar goalkeeper. Tierney fed Shugrue a pass into the circle and then received a return pass at the left post for the goal. Shugrue was credited with the assist.

    The Friars tied the game two minutes later (34:03) as freshman Kaleigh FitzPatrick (Dedham, Mass.) deflected a ball in at the left post during a corner. Senior Ashley Mulkey (Windham, N.H.) was credited with the assist.

    Georgetown took a 2-1 advantage at 52:46 in the second half as Caitlin Hickey cashed in on a deflection at the post, off a feed from Laura Thistle. However, the Friars managed to knot the game for a second time, 2-2, as freshman Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany) scored off a direct shot on a corner at 58:12. Sophomore Hillary Anderson (Barrington, R.I.) and senior Deirdre Quinn (Walpole, Mass.) earned assists on the play.

    In the extra session both teams registered two shots each, but the Hoyas closed the door and took the win as Tierney notched her second goal of the day off a feed from Annie Wilson. The goal developed off a breakaway, as Wilson dumped the ball to Tierney inside the circle on the left side and she put the ball in the upper right hand side of the net.

    Providence outshot Georgetown, 22-12, including a 16-5 edge in shots on goal. Providence also held an 11-5 advantage in penalty corner.

     

     

    The Friars conclude their season on Sunday, October 30 against non-conference foe UMass. The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
